Never Turn Your Butt on a Celebration

Last Tuesday I interviewed Neil Fiore on Welcome Changes Radio

We were talking about how important Language is.  Language sets the energy for a conversation.

girl-phone When you speak (to yourself or others), do you speak in an empowering or disempowering way?

We spoke about Leaders, and how can they blend an acknowledgment with feedback.

Have you ever had someone say to you: “You did this great, but could you try this other thing this way?

That “but” changes the whole energy of the conversation.  The “but” actually negates the opening celebration!

How would the energy of the conversation change if it was said with something other than “but”?

Try this one on for size.  “You did this great, and could you try this other thing this way?”

Completely different energy.  The initial celebration still stands strong, and carries the constructive criticism in a way the “but” never could.

When we were talking about this, I paraphrased the entire conversation in one sentence.

“Never turn your BUT on a Celebration!”  As soon as you put your BUT in there, energy of Celebration is gone.

Next time you’re in a position to offer some feedback, make sure you begin with a celebration, and be sure to add an “and” and keep the “but” out!

Dream BIG!
